Is it Legal to Ride in the Back of a Pickup Truck?

In the United States, riding in the back of pickup truck, specifically passengers traveling in the truck bed or cargo area, is restricted to some extent. To ride in the back of a pickup truck may be a common practice, particularly in more rural areas where pickup trucks are used as the main source of transportation. However, there are certain laws in place that restrict or completely do not allow people to ride in a truck bed. On the other hand, there are states which do not have any laws regarding the legality riding in the back of pickup truck beds.

For example, in Arkansas employees that are on duty are allowed to ride in the back of pickup truck beds. In California, there are situations in which it is allowed, such as during a parade or emergency situations.
